From the Archive

REI keeps nearly a century of mountaineering gear in its Living Archive in Seattle, and that is where BEAMS men's casual buyer Keita Kobayashi and his team settled on a bright blue Expedition Parka from 1986. The two crews worked from that original sample start to finish, and they took apart other vintage examples to study their loft, proportions, hand feel and hardware.

Old Shape, New Guts

The finished parka keeps the roomy cut, fat baffles, deep patch pockets and red-orange hood of the original. The materials move into the present with a Windstopper by Gore-Tex Labs shell, 650-fill-power down, a PFAS-free water repellent finish and recycled fabrics, all sewn in a Fair Trade Certified factory.

Only 500 Made

A retro REI mountain logo sits on the chest in yellow thread, BEAMS stitches its name across the hood, and an inside label calls the project a storied design, retold. A matching stuff sack comes along for the ride. Just 500 were made for BEAMS's 50th anniversary year, priced at $599 through REI and BEAMS.
